Australia ETA (subclass 601)
A practical guide to Australia's Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), subclass 601.
What is the Australia ETA?
The ETA (subclass 601) is an electronic permission to travel to Australia for eligible short-term tourism or business visitor activities. It generally allows multiple visits of up to three months at a time during a 12-month period, or until the passport expires if sooner.
Who may be eligible?
Eligibility depends on the passport you hold, your circumstances and Australian immigration requirements. The official list of eligible passports and application instructions is maintained by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
Information commonly required
- A valid eligible passport
- Personal and passport details
- Contact information and answers to eligibility questions
- A compatible mobile device for the official Australian ETA app
How to apply
The Australian Government directs eligible travellers to use the Australian ETA app. The government application service charge is generally AUD 20; check the official website for current fees. Additional private assistance charges, if any, are separate.

Processing and decisions
Processing times vary. Some applications require further checks and no agent or private website can guarantee approval or a specific turnaround time. Do not make non-refundable travel arrangements solely on the expectation of ETA approval.
